Mangione confesses to 2024 attack on top US health official, enters guilty plea

Luigi Mangione, 28, confessed to fatally shooting Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, in a Manhattan street, as he pleaded guilty to stalking charges in front of a federal judge on Friday.

This shocking crime, which occurred in December 2024, sent shockwaves through corporate America and captivated the nation, with Mangione allegedly motivated by a desire to protest the US insurance system.

During his plea, Mangione told the federal judge, "On the morning of December 4, I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan and he died," as he admitted to stalking his victim.

Mangione is set to be sentenced on December 18, with prosecutors seeking a life term, and his lawyers have requested that the state charges be dropped to prevent double jeopardy under New York's laws.

According to Mangione's lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, "We just filed our motion in state court, explaining why the state charges must be dismissed under New York’s double jeopardy protections."

The stalking and murder charges against Mangione both carry potential life sentences, while two federal charges that could have resulted in the death penalty were previously dismissed by a judge.

The case has deeply polarized public opinion, with conservatives, led by US President Donald Trump, calling for severe punishment, and prosecutors arguing that Mangione deserves heavy punishment, as stated by Jamie McDonald, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, who said, "There can be no celebrity in assassination."

Despite the controversy, Mangione's supporters gathered at the Manhattan courthouse, showing their support amidst heavy security, while relatives of Thompson attended the hearing, and a man shouted "America loves Luigi" as they left the courthouse.

In a statement, Thompson's family expressed gratitude that the federal justice system had held Mangione accountable, saying, "While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable."

The family also noted that the murder trial is still pending and stated that they would "continue to seek the justice" Thompson deserved.

Thompson's murder highlighted deep-seated public frustration with the US commercial health care system, with some social media users portraying Mangione as a hero.

Mangione was arrested on December 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a tip from staff at a McDonald's restaurant, after a days-long manhunt.

According to US prosecutors, Mangione had traveled to New York by bus from Atlanta about 10 days before the crime and checked into a Manhattan hostel using false identification.

He allegedly conducted reconnaissance near the victim's hotel and the conference venue where the shooting took place, and after his arrest, officers found a handgun, a silencer, and a jar of Skippy peanut butter among his belongings.

Mangione also admitted in court to using a 3-D printer to manufacture a gun, which he equipped with a silencer and magazine.

A checklist found on Mangione included entries such as "intel check in" and reminders to purchase a camera from the Best Buy retail chain.
