Pep Guardiola made significant changes to his lineup, substituting six players from the team that defeated Brentford 3-0 over the weekend, with notable omissions including Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku, while Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner also made adjustments to his team.

First-half goals from Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush gave City a commanding lead at the Etihad, and a late goal from Savinho added to the scoreline, cementing their dominance.

Although City's fortunes seemed to have shifted in their favour in recent weeks, last week's disappointing 3-3 draw at Everton allowed Arsenal to regain the upper hand in the title race.

The City players endured the disappointment of witnessing a stoppage-time equaliser for West Ham against Arsenal being disallowed following a VAR check on Sunday, as the Gunners managed a narrow 1-0 win.

Guardiola's team controlled the ball in the early stages of the match on Wednesday, but Crystal Palace, with Ismaila Sarr and Adam Wharton on the bench, posed a threat on the counterattack.

City scored their first goal in the 32nd minute, courtesy of a superb back pass from Foden that set up Semenyo, who calmly scored past Dean Henderson into the far corner of the goal.

They doubled their lead just eight minutes later, with Foden once again providing the assist, this time to Marmoush, who celebrated his third Premier League goal of the season.

John Stones, who will be departing at the end of the season, received a warm reception from the City fans as he came on as a substitute towards the end of a forgettable second half.

Minutes later, Rayan Cherki made a impressive run from his own half before setting up Savinho, who scored with a sweeping shot past Henderson.

The three-goal win brings City's total points to 77, just two behind Arsenal, with City now holding a superior goal difference of plus one and having scored seven more goals than their rivals.

City will face Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, seeking to achieve a domestic cup double after winning the League Cup earlier in the season.

Before the match on Wednesday, Guardiola explained his decision to make multiple changes, stating: "When the schedule is so tight, everybody is fit, everybody needs to help."

Despite the narrow gap, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal remain strong favourites to win their first Premier League title since 2004.
