Man rescuing cow trapped in Kano well

The Kano State Fire Service has rescued a 40-year-old man and a five-year-old cow after both became trapped inside an old well in Sabon Ruwa Village, Makoda Local Government Area of the state.

The incident occurred at about 3:22pm on Wednesday after the cow reportedly fell into the old well, prompting its owner, identified as Badamasi Ibrahim, to attempt to rescue the animal.

The service disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

According to the statement, the Emergency Response Unit of the Danbatta Fire Station received a distress call from Ibrahim Jibrin, who personally went to the station to report the incident.

“The distress call was made by Ibrahim Jibrin, who came to the Danbatta Fire Station to report the incident,” the statement said.

It added that firefighters immediately mobilised to Sabon Ruwa Village, where they found the five-year-old cow trapped inside the well.

“Our men immediately rushed to the scene, where they discovered that a five-year-old cow had fallen into an old well,” the statement said.

The statement further explained that Badamasi, in an attempt to save his cow, entered the well but subsequently became trapped and was unable to get out.

“The owner of the cow, Badamasi Ibrahim, about 40 years old, attempted to enter the well to rescue the cow. However, he also became trapped inside the well and was unable to get out,” it added.

The firefighters subsequently carried out a rescue operation and successfully brought both Badamasi and the cow out of the well alive.

“Our personnel successfully rescued both the cow and Badamasi Ibrahim alive,” the statement said.

It noted that the situation became particularly dangerous because Badamasi experienced difficulty breathing while trapped inside the well.

“The man had difficulty breathing while trapped inside the well, but our personnel were able to rescue him safely,” the statement added.

Commenting on the incident, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, warned residents against entering wells to rescue people or animals, stressing that such attempts could result in fatalities.

“Members of the public should refrain from entering or diving into wells under any circumstances, as doing so could result in serious injury or loss of life,” Anas warned.

He urged residents to contact trained emergency responders whenever such incidents occur instead of attempting dangerous rescue operations themselves.

“Whenever a person or animal falls into a well, members of the public should immediately contact the fire service or other appropriate emergency responders,” he said.

Anas stressed that trained firefighters had the equipment and expertise required to carry out such rescue operations safely.

“Do not put your own life at risk while trying to rescue someone or an animal from a well. Call the appropriate emergency responders and allow trained personnel to handle the situation,” he added.

The fire service advised residents, particularly those in rural communities, to exercise caution around old and abandoned wells and ensure that such openings are properly covered or secured.

The agency said prompt reporting of emergencies would enable its personnel to respond quickly and minimise the risk of loss of life.
