Man from Borno arrested for posing as anti-corruption agency staff

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Maiduguri Zonal Directorate, have arrested a man identified as Nuhu Dahiru for allegedly impersonating an officer of the commission and obtaining N3m by false pretence.

PUNCH Metro learnt this from an official statement issued by the EFCC and uploaded on its X account on Monday.

According to the anti-graft agency, Dahiru was arrested at Tashan Bama, along Bama Road, Maiduguri, Borno State, following credible intelligence received by its operatives.

The commission said the suspect had allegedly been “parading himself as an officer of the EFCC” and using the false identity to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

The statement read in part, “Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested one Nuhu Dahiru for impersonation and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N3,000,000.00.”

The EFCC disclosed that its operatives moved in after receiving intelligence indicating that Dahiru was allegedly posing as one of its officers and exploiting the identity to obtain money from members of the public under false pretences.

A total sum of N3m was recovered from the suspect at the point of his arrest, according to the commission.

The agency further stated, “The suspect was arrested in Tashan Bama, along Bama Road, Maiduguri, Borno State, following credible intelligence indicating that he had been parading himself as an officer of the EFCC, and thereby defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.”

The EFCC said the arrest was part of its efforts to tackle fraudulent activities and protect members of the public from individuals who impersonate its officials to perpetrate financial crimes.

The suspect is expected to face prosecution after the completion of the investigations.

“He will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations,” the commission added.
