Locals condemn South African authorities after Nigerian man's fatal incident

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa has condemned the killing of its member, Mr Chika Ibe, who reportedly died following alleged inhumane treatment during a police operation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NICASA President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, said Ibe “reportedly died after being subjected to severe beating, torture, inhumane treatment, and alleged suffocation.”

Onyekwelu slammed operatives of the South African Police Service who conducted the operation at Parksig Villas Complex, Bellville, Cape Town.

“These allegations are deeply disturbing and, if confirmed, constitute a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” the statement said.

The community urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and the leadership of SAPS to immediately institute a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the Nigerian’s killing.

“Every officer found responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for torture, excessive force, or the unlawful taking of human life,” the statement affirmed.

NICASA urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, and not indulge in retaliatory actions that could cause tension and conflict.

“We strongly discourage any form of retaliation or unlawful conduct and encourage everyone to allow justice to take its course through the appropriate legal channels,” the statement further said.

The community also condoled with the family of the deceased while calling on the Nigerian diplomatic missions and the Federal Government to ensure justice for its member.

It also lauded the Western Cape provincial leadership for its swift response, dedication and support to the family following the tragic incident.
