Lawmaker empowers over 200 Lagos residents with business equipment

More than 200 residents of Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency have received livelihood and business support equipment through an empowerment programme facilitated by their representative in the House of Representatives, Mr Moshood Oshun.

The beneficiaries, drawn from different parts of the constituency, received a range of income-generating assets, including mini-buses, tricycles, sewing machines, deep freezers and other equipment and relief materials at the programme held on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Artisans, traders, skilled workers, small-business operators and other residents were among those who benefited from the intervention.

The programme was designed to provide beneficiaries with practical means of earning income, rather than relying solely on one-off financial assistance.

For some recipients, the mini-buses and tricycles are expected to provide a means of earning a livelihood through transportation, while sewing machines and deep freezers could enable beneficiaries to expand existing businesses or establish new ones.

A statement issued by the Media Office of the lawmaker on Tuesday quoted Oshun as saying that effective representation should not end with participation in legislative proceedings in Abuja, but must also address the economic realities confronting constituents.

He said lawmakers have a responsibility to listen to the people they represent and use available opportunities to facilitate interventions that can improve their livelihoods.

“Representation should not be measured only by what we do on the floor of the National Assembly. It must also be felt by the people we represent in their homes, businesses and communities,” Oshun said.

According to him, the empowerment programme reflects his commitment to a form of representation that links legislative responsibilities with tangible benefits at the grassroots.

He added that providing productive assets could give beneficiaries the opportunity to become economically self-reliant while contributing to economic activity within their communities.

The intervention comes against the backdrop of rising economic pressures on households and small businesses across Nigeria, with many low-income earners and micro-enterprises struggling with operating costs, access to capital and the high cost of essential goods and services.

Small businesses and informal enterprises remain important sources of employment and income in urban communities such as Lagos Mainland, where traders, artisans, transport operators, tailors, food vendors and other entrepreneurs depend largely on daily business activities for their livelihoods.

Against this background, beneficiaries of the Oshun initiative said the items could provide an important boost to their economic activities.

Beyond individual beneficiaries, the programme is expected to have a wider grassroots effect where the assets support businesses that employ apprentices, assistants or other workers.

Oshun said his approach to constituency representation would continue to focus on identifying areas where government interventions could make a practical difference in the lives of residents.

“Government interventions should create opportunities for people to work, earn and build sustainable livelihoods. When you empower a person with a productive asset, you are giving that person a means to participate in the economy,” he said.

The lawmaker said the initiative was part of his broader commitment to people-centred representation in Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency.

He maintained that legislative representation involved more than debates, motions and oversight activities, stressing that the ultimate measure of public service was its impact on the people.

The empowerment exercise also underscores the growing importance of constituency interventions as lawmakers seek to bridge the gap between national policymaking and the immediate needs of communities.

For the more than 200 beneficiaries, the significance of the intervention lies largely in the practical value of the items received.

Oshun said the objective was to ensure that representation in Lagos Mainland translated into opportunities that residents could see and use.

“People should be able to look at their representation and identify something tangible that has improved their circumstances. That is the kind of representation we are committed to,” he added.

With the latest intervention, the lawmaker said he would continue to support initiatives aimed at strengthening livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities across Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency.
