LAWMA Steps Up Efforts to Combat Unauthorized Trash Disposal

In a bid to stamp out illicit waste collection and dumping, the Lagos Waste Management Authority has ramped up enforcement operations in strategic areas across the state. This development was announced by the Lagos State Government via its X page on Monday.

The agency's decision to bolster its enforcement efforts is in line with its unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on illegal waste activities.

According to a statement released by the authority, LAWMA's Waste Surveillance, Investigation and Enforcement team has been working tirelessly to monitor and enforce compliance across key locations in Lagos.

The statement revealed that the agency has been taking targeted action against unlicensed operators, as evidenced by a recent operation conducted on March 19, 2026, which saw operatives cracking down on illegal cart pushers in Gbagada, Bariga, and Iwaya.

These areas are notorious for the indiscriminate collection and dumping of waste at unauthorized locations, thereby undermining efforts to maintain a cleaner city.

A suspect was apprehended during a follow-up operation, marking a significant milestone in the agency's efforts to curb illegal waste activities.

In a separate incident, on March 21, 2026, the team arrested an illegal wheelbarrow pusher during a waste source investigation exercise at a previously eradicated black spot under the Mile 12 flyover bridge, opposite the BRT terminal.

These ongoing operations are part of LAWMA's broader efforts to maintain sanitation and hygiene across the state.

By sustaining these operations, LAWMA is reaffirming its commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier Lagos, and residents are being advised to only use authorized PSP operators and avoid engaging with illegal waste handlers.

LAWMA's records show that in 2025, a total of 1,023 cases of illegal waste dumping and other waste-management violations were reported across Lagos State, with 447 cases referred for prosecution.
