Law enforcement, Osun pupils engage in violent confrontation following classmate's fatal accident

Tension erupted in Ijebu-Jesa, Osun State, on Wednesday, as a violent confrontation unfolded between police officers and students of Interlink College of Health Technology, sparked by the tragic death of a student in a road accident.

The student, identified as Oluwaseun, a National Diploma II student of Mass Communication, met his untimely demise while riding a motorcycle back to Ijebu-Jesa, when a bus collided with him along the Ijebu-Jesa/Esa-Oke Road.

A disturbing video obtained by PUNCH Metro captured the intense standoff between outraged students and police officers at the accident scene, with the students demanding that the bus driver be handed over to them.

A source, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that the students' anger was fueled by the death of their colleague, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after the accident, despite attempts to revive him.

According to the source, the students descended upon the scene, insisting that the driver be surrendered to them, while the police officers, who had responded to the distress call, urged the students to allow the vehicle to be taken to the station for further investigation.

The situation took a turn for the worse when some students attempted to set the bus ablaze, prompting the police to fire tear gas into the air to disperse the crowd, which in turn created widespread panic in the area.

The source further explained that the deceased student was traveling from Ilesa when the accident occurred, and although efforts were made to save him, he unfortunately died, leading his colleagues to stage protests around the town, which have since subsided.

When reached for comment, Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, but noted that the deceased student's identity had not been fully established at the time of the report, adding that calm had been restored to the community thanks to police intervention.

The management of Interlink College of Health Technology has announced a temporary closure of the institution in tribute to the deceased student, with the shutdown also intended to allow the school community to mourn the loss.

In a statement signed by Mr. L. Balogun on behalf of the Registrar, the management advised students to remain calm and prayerful during this difficult time, with academic activities slated to resume on Tuesday, 19th May, 2026.
