Law enforcement frees 10 travelers following armed robbery on Kano expressway

The Kano State Police Command has rescued 10 passengers following an attack by suspected bandits along the Jos-Kano highway.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna.

According to the statement, five suspected armed bandits, armed with machetes and a firearm, blocked the highway, attacked a commercial vehicle and abducted 13 of the 20 passengers on board.

“On 26th July, 2026, at about 1730hrs, the Divisional Police Officer, Doguwa Division, received a distress call that a Toyota Hiace bus with Registration No. BKK 6824 XA, travelling from Jos to Kano, was attacked by armed men at the Falgore Forest axis in Doguwa Local Government Area, between Gate Two Safer Highway and Dogo Dutse.

“According to the report, five suspected armed bandits armed with machetes and a firearm blocked the highway, attacked the vehicle and abducted thirteen (13) out of the twenty (20) passengers on board,” the statement said.

It said that upon receiving the distress call, the DPO immediately mobilised a team of tactical police operatives to the scene, where they engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel.

“As a result of the swift and coordinated response of the Police team, nine victims were successfully rescued. One other male victim later escaped from captivity. Unfortunately, three victims remain in captivity, comprising one male and two females,” the statement said.

The Command added that the rescued victims were immediately evacuated to Doguwa General Hospital for medical evaluation and are currently in stable condition while receiving treatment.

It said operational and manhunt efforts had been intensified, including the deployment of additional tactical teams and sustained intelligence gathering, to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining captives and the arrest of the fleeing suspects.

“The decisive operation underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police to proactive policing, rapid response, and the protection of lives and property through community partnership,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Ibrahim Bakori, commended residents and road users for providing timely information.

He reassured residents that the Command remained committed to protecting lives and property across the state.

“Investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated to the public in due course,” the statement added.
