Law enforcement detains quartet in connection with violent crowd slaying in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has taken four suspects into custody in connection with the alleged mob killing of 21-year-old Emmanuel Effiong. This development was confirmed by DSP Timfon John, the state's Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement released in Uyo on Friday.

According to DSP John, the suspects are accused of murdering the victim and then secretly burying his body in a shallow grave. The police investigation revealed that the deceased had allegedly stolen chickens and eggs from a poultry farm located along Mbak 4 Community in Uyo Local Government Area on April 19.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the victim was brutally beaten with sticks and machetes, which ultimately led to his death. The investigation into the matter was initiated after the police received credible information, along with a viral video clip showing the deceased being assaulted by a group of individuals.

The disturbing footage showed the victim lying helpless in a pool of blood, with his hands and legs tied, before being dragged on the ground beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up van. The police spokesperson noted that the footage was a crucial piece of evidence in the case.

Following the receipt of this intelligence, operatives of the Command launched a thorough investigation, which resulted in the arrest of four principal suspects, according to John. The police also recovered critical exhibits connected to the crime, including the Mitsubishi pick-up van allegedly used during the offence.

The state Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, strongly condemned the act, emphasizing that anyone apprehended for an alleged offence should be handed over to the police or other lawful authorities for due process. He reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting human life and upholding the rule of law.
