Law enforcement brings alleged car battery burglar before court in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 29-year-old man, Oshim Daniel, before an Enugu State Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing vehicle batteries and other valuables from residents of Alulu-Nike community in Enugu State.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, saying the suspect was remanded in a correctional custodial centre pending the hearing and determination of the case.

According to the statement, operatives attached to the Abakpa Police Division rescued the suspect from an angry mob on July 29 after he was allegedly caught stealing vehicle batteries and other valuables from residents a day earlier.

“The Enugu State Police Command has prosecuted a 29-year-old suspect, Oshim Daniel, who was rescued from an angry mob by operatives attached to the Abakpa Division on July 29, 2026. The suspect was alleged to have stolen vehicle batteries and other valuables from residents of Alulu-Nike, Enugu, on July 28, 2026,” the statement read.

Police investigations allegedly linked the suspect to the theft of three vehicle batteries belonging to different victims. The batteries were valued at N150,000, N45,000 and N32,000 respectively and were identified by their owners.

Ndukwe said operatives also recovered a public address system, a Point-of-Sale device, a gas cylinder, a vehicle stereo system, a spare tyre and other items suspected to have been stolen by the suspect.

“The suspect confessed to the crime and was charged with three counts of stealing contrary to the provisions of the Criminal Code of Enugu State, 2004. Following his arraignment, the court remanded him pending the hearing and determination of the case,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Giwa, commended the operatives for rescuing the suspect from mob action and ensuring he was prosecuted through lawful means.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, commended the operatives and urged citizens to remain law-abiding by handing over arrested suspects to the Police for proper investigation and prosecution instead of resorting to jungle justice,” Ndukwe said.

The police commissioner also advised vehicle owners to strengthen the security of their vehicles by installing effective locking and anti-theft devices and registering them on the Nigeria Police Electronic Central Motor Registry to enhance vehicle security and facilitate the recovery of stolen vehicles.
