Law enforcement apprehends suspect in connection with armed heist, seizes gun in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom Police Command has announced the arrest of an armed robbery suspect in the Uyo Metropolis, during which a locally fabricated firearm was also recovered.

This development was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, in a statement issued in Uyo on Monday.

According to John, the suspect was caught during a stop-and-search operation conducted around the Mayflower axis on Oron Road, Uyo.

The operation was prompted by a distress call received by the command at about 10:30p.m on June 27 from a resident of Ikot Okubo, who reported suspected armed robbers’ activities.

Police personnel from the command swiftly mobilised to cordon off and search the affected area, with the support of some community members.

As a result of the collaborative effort, a suspect was apprehended and found to be in possession of a medium-sized locally fabricated firearm.

Upon sighting the police, the other members of the gang fled the scene, and the command has since launched a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The police aim to bring the suspects to justice and have also initiated a thorough investigation to determine the suspect’s level of involvement in the alleged crimes.

The investigation will also help the police identify and dismantle the underlying criminal network, according to John.

The command, as stated by John, will continue to demonstrate its commitment to protecting lives and property in the state.
