LASUTH defends digitalisation over patient record concerns

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, has defended its ongoing digitalisation programme, assuring patients and the public that the initiative is progressing according to plan despite concerns over delays in medical consultations and the continued manual movement of patient records.

The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, gave the assurance in a statement released on Thursday while responding to reports that patient case files were still being transported manually, with large volumes of folders occupying parts of the hospital’s records section.

Fabamwo explained that the digital transformation project was being implemented in phases to ensure efficiency, sustainability and minimal disruption to patient care.

He said the first phase of the programme had already been completed in the Family Medicine and Ophthalmology departments, where electronic systems are now being used to improve patient care, records management and service delivery.

According to him, the hospital’s Accounts Department has also been fully digitalised, leading to improved financial processes, greater transparency and enhanced operational efficiency.

“The process of digitalising LASUTH has already commenced and is progressing in a carefully planned, phased manner to ensure efficiency, sustainability and minimal disruption to patient care,” he said.

Fabamwo disclosed that the next phase of the project would begin within the next few weeks and would extend electronic medical records and other digital solutions to additional clinical and administrative departments across the hospital.

He reiterated LASUTH’s commitment to achieving full digital transformation in line with global best practices and the Lagos State Government’s vision of delivering efficient, patient-centred and technology-driven healthcare services.

The Chief Medical Director also thanked patients, staff and members of the public for their patience and continued support as the hospital advances its digital transformation programme.
