LASG expands rural electrification with new transformers

The Lagos State Government has expanded its rural electrification programme with the installation of new electricity transformers across several underserved communities.

The installations, carried out through the Office of Rural Development, have reached communities across Epe, Badagry, Ikorodu, Iba, Igando and other parts of the state since 2024.

Speaking on the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr Nurudeen Agbaje, said the programme was designed to address longstanding electricity challenges affecting rural and semi-urban communities.

“Rural electrification is not just about transformers or power supply; it is about restoring hope, stimulating economic opportunities, and improving the quality of life for residents who have long struggled with inadequate infrastructure,” he said.

According to Agbaje, stable electricity remains critical to economic activity, healthcare delivery, education and security in many rural communities.

The intervention recorded a major rollout in January 2026 when a transformer was installed in Ifesowapo CDA, Oloja Estate in Epe, where residents said electricity supply improved significantly after the project was completed.

Days later, another transformer was delivered to Mowo Extension Community Zone 3 in Badagry, with residents describing the development as a relief for businesses affected by unstable power supply.

On January 31, Ijagemo Central CDA in Iba Local Council Development Area also received a transformer after years of complaints over poor electricity supply.

The government subsequently extended installations to Isale-Agoro and Ilara communities in Epe Local Government Area on February 3, as officials reiterated plans to expand electricity access across more communities.

At Progressive Community in Egan, within Igando-Ikotun LCDA, residents commended the state government after another transformer was installed on February 8.

Community leaders in the area said the intervention demonstrated responsiveness to grassroots demands and would help improve commercial activities.

The same day, new transformers were also installed at United Enclave Community in Selewu, Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA; Ajaiyi-Oronti CDA in Agbele, Ikorodu Central; and Oluja CDA in Lasuwon, Ikorodu North LCDA.

Residents in the benefiting communities said improved electricity supply would support traders, artisans and small-scale enterprises heavily dependent on power.

One of the largest interventions under the programme took place on March 10, when the state government installed two transformers in Omigo communities in Isiu, Ikorodu North LCDA.

The project restored electricity to Omigo CDA Phase One and Omigo Onafoniyin Phase Two after nearly two years without power, while also extending supply to about 10 neighbouring communities.

Residents described the restoration as significant for schools, households, religious centres and local businesses that had struggled during the prolonged blackout.

Additional installations were also carried out in Banana Estate CDA Phase One in Igbe-Lara and Pacesetter CDA in Ibeshe, both in Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA.

In Badagry Division, transformers were delivered to Finayon CDA in Ajara Agbovipe and Ajido Community on March 14 as part of efforts to address persistent electricity problems in the area.

The programme later extended to Olaitan Ojoafeje CDA in Apapa-Iganmu LCDA on April 2, while Animashaun/Otun CDA and Maye/Eleshi CDA in Epe, alongside Divine Homes CDA in the Lekki-Ajah corridor, also received new transformers.

During an inspection of projects in Ikorodu and other parts of the state, Agbaje urged CDAs to protect and maintain the infrastructure.

“Sustainability and collective responsibility are essential to the long-term success of this initiative,” he said.

The latest installations were recorded on May 6 at Holy Land CDA in Apapa and Oluwalogbon Kajola Agiliti CDA in Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, where residents said the intervention would help improve security and economic activities in the communities.

Agbaje said additional communities had been scheduled for subsequent phases of the electrification programme.

He added that the government would continue efforts to expand electricity access and reduce infrastructure deficits in rural areas across the state.
