LASG begins six-road overhaul across Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Ifelodun

The Lagos State Government has commenced the construction of six roads in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government and Ifelodun Local Council Development Area, with the projects expected to improve access to markets and public facilities, ease movement and strengthen economic activity in the densely populated communities.

The projects, which the authorities say are up to 1,835 metres of roads, were flagged off with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Nurudeen Agbaje.

The intervention comprises Asubiojo Street (320m) and Owoseni Street (115m) in Ifelodun LCDA, as well as Cemetery Market Road (250m), Isikalu Street (560m), Alayabiagba Street (320m) and Odofin Street (270m) in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government.

The roads will be reconstructed with interlocking pavement and covered drainage systems, while solar-powered streetlights will be installed as part of the completed infrastructure.

The government said the projects are expected to be delivered within 12 months.

Speaking at the flag-off, Agbaje said the projects were part of the administration’s effort to take infrastructure development directly into communities rather than concentrating interventions on major roads and urban corridors.

He said the road projects were intended to deliver “meaningful development closer to residents at the grassroots,” particularly in communities where the condition of local infrastructure directly affects movement and commercial activity.

According to him, the intervention reflects the administration’s determination to provide infrastructure that improves residents’ quality of life while supporting economic activities at the local level.

Agbaje said the projects would “improve movement within the benefiting communities, improve access to markets and public services, reduce transportation costs and travel time,” while also creating employment opportunities and stimulating local economic activity.

The inclusion of covered drainage, he added, is intended to ensure the road infrastructure is supported by drainage facilities that improve the durability and functionality of the projects.

The roads are particularly significant to the communities they serve because of their links to residential areas, markets and public facilities.

Government officials said improving the routes would make movement of people and goods easier and reduce the transport burden associated with poor local road infrastructure.

The projects are also expected to improve access to essential services and strengthen links between neighbouring communities, while the planned solar streetlights are expected to improve visibility and security around the roads after completion.

Agbaje said the intervention was consistent with the government’s wider grassroots development strategy under the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure and inclusive development across Lagos.

He described the projects as part of the state’s broader commitment to ensuring that residents in local communities also benefit from public infrastructure, stressing that development at the grassroots remained important to the overall progress of Lagos.

The six roads will therefore be delivered as a single infrastructure intervention across the two local government areas, combining road reconstruction, drainage and street lighting rather than treating the roads as standalone rehabilitation projects.
