LASG, Agege LG partner on urban renewal projects

The Lagos State Office of Urban Development and Agege Local Government have initiated discussions on a joint urban renewal initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering community development in Agege.

The collaboration was discussed during a courtesy visit by the Chairman of Agege Local Government, Ganiyu Obasa, to the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Adetunji Adeyemi.

At the meeting, both parties explored strategies to strengthen coordination between the state and local government on urban regeneration projects and environmental improvement within the council area.

Obasa briefed officials on ongoing grassroots projects, including the construction of community market villages and infrastructure improvements around Kadiri Street, Bode Tobun Street, Adesokan Street, Okunola Street and Disu Akogun Street.

According to him, the areas fall within communities previously identified for regeneration under the state’s urban renewal framework.

“Our goal is to ensure that these communities experience structured development that improves living conditions and economic activities,” the chairman said.

Discussions also focused on the role of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency in supporting complementary infrastructure, such as drainage systems and road networks, to ensure proper integration of the projects into the state’s broader urban planning agenda.

Officials said the collaboration would go beyond physical construction to include improved access roads, effective drainage and flood mitigation infrastructure.

The meeting resolved to conduct a joint technical inspection of the project sites involving officials of LASURA, urban development teams and drainage engineers to assess construction progress and identify areas requiring intervention.

Although some of the proposed interventions were not included in the current fiscal budget, the Office of Urban Development assured the council of its willingness to explore possible solutions and institutional support.

Adeyemi commended the local government for what he described as proactive leadership in addressing infrastructure and environmental challenges.

“We are committed to providing the necessary technical guidance and institutional support to ensure these developments align with Lagos State’s broader urban transformation agenda,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between state and local authorities in delivering coordinated urban renewal projects.

The meeting further addressed concerns over unregulated developments, flooding and structural vulnerabilities in parts of the council area, with both sides agreeing on the need for stronger compliance measures and coordinated monitoring to prevent environmental degradation.

Also present at the meeting were the General Manager of LASURA, Oladimeji Animashaun, the Council Engineer for Agege Local Government, Olajide Abejide, as well as senior officials from the Office of Urban Development and LASURA.
