Lagos warns motorists against fake traffic fine messages

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has warned motorists and other members of the public against fraudulent text messages and malicious links claiming that recipients have committed traffic offences.

The ministry said the messages are fraudulent attempts designed to deceive motorists and steal sensitive personal and banking information.

In an advisory on its X handle on Friday to the public, the ministry urged motorists not to click on unverified links, share personal information or make payments through third-party platforms.

It warned that the fraudulent messages and websites may appear to offer motorists opportunities to settle alleged traffic offences, but are instead designed to obtain confidential information from unsuspecting victims.

The ministry also cautioned motorists against platforms offering discounts on traffic penalties.

According to the ministry, Lagos State does not offer discounts on traffic penalties across any of its platforms, stressing that all official statutory fines are strictly fixed.

Motorists were advised to verify the authenticity of traffic tickets and check their vehicle status only through the state’s approved platforms.

The ministry listed payvis.ng and tms.lagosstate.gov.ng as the official platforms for such services.

The public was further urged to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited messages concerning traffic violations and to avoid making payments or providing personal and banking details through suspicious links.

The warning comes amid concerns over fraudulent online platforms targeting motorists through fake traffic offence notices and payment requests.
