Lagos shuts down pair of sites for breaching sewage discharge regulations

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office took enforcement action against two facilities, the Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island and Foodies Restaurant on Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase I, Eti-Osa, due to alleged environmental violations related to improper wastewater disposal.

These facilities were sealed off as part of the agency's efforts to curb environmental pollution and ensure compliance with wastewater regulations across the state, according to a post from Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State, on Wednesday, following the enforcement exercise carried out on Tuesday.

The Balmoral Convention Centre was sealed for improperly discharging raw sewage into the public drain through pumping equipment and experiencing wastewater overflow from a blocked sewage chamber, resulting in foul odour and public nuisance in the area.

Similarly, Foodies Restaurant was shut down for discharging untreated wastewater containing high levels of fat and oil into public drains, causing blockage of drainage channels and environmental pollution.

According to LSWMO officials, both facilities had previously received warnings but failed to comply with the required environmental standards, prompting the need for enforcement action to protect public health and maintain sanitation standards.

A government official noted that the discharge of untreated wastewater into public drains poses serious environmental and health risks to residents, highlighting the importance of adhering to wastewater management guidelines.

The Lagos State Government emphasized that all residents, businesses, and property managers must strictly adhere to wastewater management guidelines or face sanctions, warning that any individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations will be met with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution.

LSWMO warned that any violations of environmental regulations will be met with sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws, stressing the importance of compliance.

The agency will continue to conduct monitoring and enforcement operations across the state as part of efforts to improve urban sanitation and reduce drain blockage and pollution.
