Lagos reviews Somolu hospital operations amid space constraints

The Lagos State Health Service Commission has reviewed operations at the General Hospital, Somolu, with its oversight team assessing the facility’s compliance, sanitation and service delivery amid space constraints.

The assessment was conducted by the Commissioner IV on the HSC Board, Mrs Omolayo Ololade Fadipe, during a routine supervisory visit to the hospital.

Fadipe, who was received by the hospital’s Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Adesina Ayodele, and members of the management team, expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance observed during the inspection.

The commissioner, however, acknowledged the pressure under which the hospital’s personnel were operating, particularly the limitations imposed by the available space.

She commended the volume and quality of work being delivered by the staff despite the constraints and urged them to sustain their performance.

The visit also took Fadipe through key sections of the facility, including the site of the ongoing new hospital project.

The project is significant against the backdrop of the hospital’s existing space limitations and the growing demand for healthcare services in Somolu. The HSC did not state the projected completion date or capacity of the new facility in the statement announcing the visit.

The Medical Director, Ayodele, commended the state government for its continued investment in healthcare delivery and specifically linked the ongoing hospital project to efforts to improve access to healthcare for residents of Somolu.

Ayodele said the management and staff would continue to work within their capacity to provide quality services to residents, in line with the administration’s THEMES Plus agenda.

The inspection formed part of Fadipe’s statutory supervisory responsibilities as Commissioner IV, which include routine evaluation of designated state-owned secondary healthcare facilities, assessment of operational and clinical standards, sanitation checks and monitoring of service delivery.

Her portfolio covers six facilities: General Hospital, Somolu; Harvey Road General Hospital; Mushin General Hospital; Isolo General Hospital; Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital; and the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba.

The commission’s supervisory function also includes assessing patient-care standards, identifying infrastructure and service gaps, engaging medical directors and health workers on operational and welfare concerns, and evaluating the overall performance of facilities under its oversight.
