Lagos Marks World Water Day by Encouraging Citizens to Conserve Precious Resource

The Lagos State Government has urged residents to prioritise water conservation and support efforts to improve access to clean water.

The message was shared by the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Sunday to mark World Water Day.

Wahab said, “As we celebrate World Water Day, let’s remember: water is life, and it’s up to us to protect it. This year’s theme is all about empowering women and girls in water management. It’s time to ensure equal access to clean water and promote sustainable development.”

He also raised concerns about global access to safe water.

“Did you know over 2.1 billion people lack safe water? We can make a difference by advocating for better water management, he said.

Speaking on efforts in Lagos, he outlined steps to improve water supply.

He wrote, “In Lagos, we’re taking steps to improve water supply. We’re rehabilitating waterworks, investing in new infrastructure, and exploring partnerships to bring in expertise and funding. Our goal is to ensure all homes have access to clean water by 2027.”

He added that measures are ongoing to reduce reliance on alternative sources and promote conservation.

“We’re working to reduce dependence on boreholes and wells, and promoting water conservation. Let’s join forces to make a change. Every drop counts!,” he said.
