Lagos government shuts down more than 20 buildings due to zoning violations

The Lagos State Government has taken drastic action, sealing over 20 properties in the Ikeja Local Government Area due to non-compliance with physical planning regulations.

This enforcement exercise was carried out by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, as part of its efforts to ensure adherence to the state's planning laws.

Leading the charge was the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Olayinka Wasiu, who was accompanied by the General Manager of the authority, Kehinde Osinaike, and other top officials.

The affected properties included a range of assets, such as landed properties, uncompleted buildings, and structures with unauthorized extensions, all of which were found to be in breach of the Lagos State Physical Planning Law.

According to Olayinka Wasiu, the enforcement action was a preemptive measure aimed at preventing building collapse and promoting orderly physical development.

The state government's goal, as stated by Wasiu, is to protect lives and property by enforcing planning regulations that guarantee a safe and sustainable built environment across Lagos State.

It was revealed that the affected property owners had been notified prior to the exercise, with contravention notices served outlining the necessary steps to regularize their developments.

Olayinka Wasiu urged property owners and developers to obtain the necessary planning permits and approvals before commencing any development or structural alteration.
