Lagos eyes partnerships to bridge water supply gap

The Lagos State Government has announced that it is exploring strategic partnerships to bridge the state’s water supply gap, enhance public access to clean and safe water, and reduce overreliance on private boreholes and wells.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement shared on X on Sunday to commemorate World Water Day.

World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, is a global initiative established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the vital role of freshwater in sustaining life.

Wahab stated that it was important for everyone to have access to clean water through water management practices.

He wrote, “As we celebrate World Water Day, let’s remember: water is life, and it’s up to us to protect it. This year’s theme is all about empowering women and girls in water management. It’s time to ensure equal access to clean water and promote sustainable development.

“Did you know over 2.1 billion people lack safe water? We can make a difference by advocating for better water management.”

He added that the state was making steps to improve water supply through the rehabilitation of waterworks and partnership opportunities.

He noted that the state targeted 2027 as the timeline for every home to have access to clean water.

“In Lagos, we’re taking steps to improve water supply. We’re rehabilitating waterworks, investing in new infrastructure, and exploring partnerships to bring in expertise and funding. Our goal is to ensure all homes have access to clean water by 2027.

“We’re working to reduce dependence on boreholes and wells, and promoting water conservation. Let’s join forces to make a change. Every drop counts,” Wahab concluded.

Despite its critical importance, several homes in Lagos State still rely on personal boreholes and wells as a water source.

The lack of access to safe drinking water in Lagos State has raised concerns despite the majority of the state being occupied by water.
