Lagos Emergency Agency Still Weighing Options for Assistance to Flood-Affected Residents

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has yet to receive official word on providing relief or compensation to those who suffered losses during the recent flooding in various parts of the state.

Afolabi Olawale, spokesperson for LASEMA, stated in a telephone interview on Thursday that the agency lacked an official directive on the matter, emphasizing that there was no official statement to share at the time.

Olawale's comments came after a joint assessment of flood-affected communities by the National Emergency Management Agency and LASEMA, aiming to determine the extent of damage and identify immediate victim needs.

The assessment spanned communities in Alimosho, Ikeja, Kosofe, and Lagos Island Local Government Areas, evaluating damage, affected infrastructure, and resident humanitarian needs.

Visited communities included Oke-Ira in Ikeja, Oworonshoki and Gbagada in Kosofe, as well as Idumagbo Avenue and Jankara on Lagos Island.

According to NEMA, findings revealed that prolonged rainfall and inadequate drainage systems led to widespread flooding, impacting homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.

The flooding resulted in damaged property, disrupted economic activities, and temporarily displaced some residents, while also rendering several roads impassable.

As part of the assessment, residents were educated on flood prevention measures, including proper waste disposal and regular desilting of drains, canals, and stormwater channels.

NEMA intends to submit its findings to the relevant authorities to facilitate necessary intervention, urging residents to maintain clear drainage channels and avoid obstructing stormwater flow.

These victims appealed to the state government for relief materials to cover some of their losses incurred during the flooding incident.
