The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has urged residents of Lagos to exercise caution in their transactions as Easter approaches, warning of increased risks of exploitation and unsafe practices during the festive period.

In a statement cited on its X page on Thursday, the agency’s General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, said consumers must remain alert amid heightened commercial activity.

“Consumers should be mindful of the increased commercial activities typically associated with the festive period, which often come with risks such as price inflation, sale of substandard, expired or hazardous products, and misleading promotional offers,” he said.

Solebo advised residents to take practical steps to protect themselves, including verifying the quality and authenticity of goods before purchase.

“It is important to check expiry dates, especially on food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals, avoid patronising unregistered or suspicious vendors, and always demand receipts with proper documentation for all transactions,” he added.

He also warned traders and service providers against exploiting consumers, noting that the agency would step up enforcement efforts.

“We will intensify monitoring and enforcement operations across markets, shopping centres and recreational venues during the Easter period,” Solebo said.

The LASCOPA boss encouraged residents to report violations, assuring that the agency is ready to respond swiftly.

“Residents are encouraged to report any case of consumer rights violations or unscrupulous trade practices for prompt intervention through our official communication channels,” he stated.

He further advised caution in online transactions, stressing that payments should be made only upon delivery to vendors with a physical presence within the state.

Solebo reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting consumers, adding: “Consumers have fundamental rights, but they also have responsibilities — to be careful, informed, watchful and to speak up when necessary.”
