Lagos captures 6.4m residents in digital identity drive

Lagos State Government has disclosed that a total of 6,465,667 residents have been captured under the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency database as part of efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery across the state.

The Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Tobosun Alake, made the disclosure during the ongoing annual ministerial press briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s seventh year in office.

He provided a breakdown of the figures, stating that 4,058,333 adults and 2,407,224 children have so far been registered under the exercise.

Alake said the Lagos Identity Card project remains central to the state’s governance and service delivery strategy, noting: “The Lagos Identity Card Project (LAG ID) is a critical component of the state government’s drive to enhance governance efficiency and public service delivery in line with the THEMES agenda of the Sanwo-Olu administration.”

He added that the initiative was designed to support planning, policy implementation and resource allocation, stating: “The identity management initiative is designed to provide the government with a comprehensive database for planning, policy implementation and effective allocation of resources.”

According to him, the system operates on an open framework that allows collaboration across government agencies and private sector partners.

Alake further explained that the structure enables data sharing and coordinated operations across institutions, while maintaining a centralised infrastructure for information management.

On digital enforcement and safety initiatives, he said: “There has been an increase in digital traffic enforcement leading to tracking of about 86,000 in months and 737,000 till date.”

Speaking on technology and innovation, he described the “Art and Technology Lagos” initiative as an annual platform aimed at convening stakeholders in the tech ecosystem to support a smarter city agenda.

On data protection, he said the state currently has 109 data protection officers to ensure compliance and safeguard residents’ information.

He also noted that Lagos records about 250,000 monthly online visits across government platforms, adding that backend analytics help monitor user engagement and service delivery.

On fibre optic expansion, Alake said the state has deployed about 3,000 kilometres of fibre duct infrastructure across areas including Alimosho, Ikorodu and Ibeju-Lekki, with plans to extend this to 5,000 kilometres through private sector participation.
