Lack of proper upkeep is hindering Nigeria's progress, according to Okonjo-Iweala

Nigeria's subpar maintenance culture is eroding the value of its infrastructure and hindering economic progress, according to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

Okonjo-Iweala made this assertion on Monday while delivering the keynote address at the 2026 Delta State Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba, where she spoke on the theme 'Harnessing Our Strengths, Unlocking Our Potentials'.

As the former Minister of Finance, she emphasized that merely allocating funds in the budget is not enough to drive development, stressing that effective execution and proper maintenance of infrastructure are essential.

Okonjo-Iweala pointed out that Nigeria lacks a culture of maintenance, acknowledging this as a Nigerian herself, and underscored the need for this to change.

The Director-General urged governments to focus not only on initiating new projects but also on preserving existing infrastructure to maximize economic returns and stimulate growth.

She also advocated for improvements in critical infrastructure, including ports and digital facilities, to reduce the cost of doing business and enhance Nigeria's competitiveness.

Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that successful execution requires focus and prioritization, saying "We need better ports and digital infrastructure, and lower trade costs, execution is what matters".

The three-day summit, organised by the Delta State Government, aims to attract investments and promote economic growth in the state, drawing policymakers, investors, and business leaders from within and outside Nigeria.

Delegations from China and Brazil were among the attendees, and Vice President Kashim Shettima declared the summit open on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
