Labour Party puts off party gatherings, establishes 46-member committee for convention planning

The Labour Party has delayed its ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention, which was initially scheduled to commence on Thursday, March 26, 2026, citing the need to facilitate broader participation in its ongoing membership re-registration exercise.

This decision was made public in a statement issued in Abuja by Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Senior Special Adviser to the Interim National Chairman on Media.

The party's revised timeline marks a departure from its earlier schedule, which had ward congresses set for March 26, local government congresses for March 28, state congresses for March 31, and a national convention for April 11, 2026.

A combined stakeholders' meeting, attended by members of the Interim National Working Committee and representatives of labour unions, led to the decision to postpone the events.

The postponement aims to provide ample opportunity for members and prospective Nigerians to participate fully in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise, according to the statement.

As part of efforts to ensure a seamless and credible process, the party has established a 45-member Congress and Convention Committee, chaired by Hon Ginger Onwusibe, who represents Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The committee comprises other notable members, including Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Hon Obinna Aguocha, Hon Amaobi Ogah, Hon Ibe Okwara, Hon Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Hon Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Hon Benedict Etanabene, Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, Comrade Lawson Osagie, and Mrs Imaobong Ufot, among others, as stated by Asogwa.

Senator Nenadi Usman, the National Chairman of the party, urged committee members to discharge their responsibilities with utmost diligence, impartiality, and commitment during the committee's inauguration.

She encouraged the committee to take full advantage of the postponement to ensure that all necessary preparations are thoroughly completed, guaranteeing hitch-free congresses and conventions.

The party has appealed to its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and its supporters nationwide for their understanding, assuring that a new timetable would be communicated in due course, as stated by Senator Usman.
