Labour Party establishes vetting panel for internal elections

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party has formed an eight-member committee to scrutinize aspirants vying for elective positions, as outlined in a public notice issued on Friday in Abuja.

This notice was jointly signed by the party's National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary, Iheanacho Obioma, and it highlights the committee's establishment in accordance with the party's constitution and the electoral guidelines for the 2026 primaries.

The committee, which is chaired by Nenadi Usman, comprises members including Mrs Oluchi Okpara, Mohammed Salisu, Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke, and Dr Olu Ayewo, with Iheanacho Obioma serving as secretary.

The committee's responsibilities include screening aspirants for presidential, governorship, and National Assembly positions, as well as recommending qualified candidates for the party's primaries.

Additionally, the committee will verify the authenticity of documents submitted by aspirants and ensure compliance with the party's constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to the party's timetable, the screening process for House of Assembly and governorship aspirants is scheduled to take place on May 20, while National Assembly and presidential aspirants will be screened on May 22.
