Kwara: NSCDC records 36 domestic violence cases in six months

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kwara State Command, has disclosed that it handled 36 domestic violence cases between January and June 2026, alongside dozens of other gender-related offences across the state.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ilorin by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ayoola Shola.

Speaking on the success, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Abbas Mohammed, said it also secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sexual offender between January and June 2026.

Mohammed added that the command also handled 19 child custody disputes during the period, noting that 15 had been resolved while four remained pending.

The commandant further revealed that the command received 38 cases of child abandonment, adding that six had been successfully resolved, while investigations into the remaining cases were ongoing to ensure the welfare of the affected children.

“The command received 38 cases of child abandonment, with six successfully resolved, while efforts are ongoing to conclude investigations and ensure the welfare of the affected children,” Mohammed stated.

On kidnapping-related incidents, Mohammed said nine abduction cases were reported to the command within the review period, adding that four victims had been rescued and reunited with their families through the intervention of NSCDC operatives.

“Nine abduction cases were reported during the period, and four victims have since been reunited with their families through the timely intervention of the Corps,” he said.

The command also disclosed that eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation are currently before competent courts.

“Eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation are currently before competent courts for prosecution. The Command remains resolute in ensuring offenders are brought to justice in accordance with the law,” Mohammed added.

Highlighting one of the command’s major achievements during the period, the commandant said the NSCDC secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sexual offender, describing the judgment as a testament to the Corps’ commitment to ensuring justice for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

Mohammed commended personnel of the Gender Unit for their professionalism and dedication, urging residents to promptly report cases of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual offences and other forms of gender-based violence for immediate intervention.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women, children and other vulnerable persons through thorough investigation, collaboration with relevant stakeholders, and strict enforcement of the law.
