Kwara calls for timely tax settlements to boost internally generated revenue

The Kwara State Government has urged all taxable persons to pay their taxes promptly, saying increased compliance is critical to strengthening the state’s internally generated revenue and enhancing its capacity to deliver sustainable development projects.
nThe government said every tax remitted represents not only a legal obligation but also an investment in the state’s development and the overall well-being of its citizens, stressing that timely tax payment remains essential to building a prosperous Kwara.
nAccording to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, Shade Omoniyi, the appeal comes amid ongoing tax reforms aimed at creating a fairer and more equitable tax system across the country.
nOmoniyi said, “Every tax remitted is not just a legal obligation but also an investment in the sustainable development and better quality of life for all Kwarans.”
nShe explained that the reforms are intended to reduce the tax burden on low-income earners while ensuring that individuals with greater financial capacity contribute a fair share towards national and state development.
n“As governments at all levels continue to implement tax reforms aimed at creating a fairer and more equitable tax system, every eligible taxpayer has a role to play,” she said.
nOmoniyi particularly urged high-net-worth individuals in the state to embrace timely compliance with their tax obligations, noting that their contributions are vital to expanding the state’s revenue base.
n“Their contributions are critical to strengthening the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), expanding the government’s capacity to deliver sustainable development projects, and promoting equity within the tax system,” she stated.
nThe KW-IRS chairman reaffirmed the service’s commitment to a transparent, efficient and technology-driven tax administration that makes tax compliance simple, convenient and taxpayer-friendly.
nShe, however, warned that although the service would continue to prioritise voluntary compliance, appropriate enforcement measures would be applied where necessary to ensure adherence to relevant tax laws.
n“While voluntary compliance remains the Service’s preferred approach, appropriate enforcement measures will be applied where necessary to ensure compliance with the provisions of relevant tax laws and to protect the interests of law-abiding taxpayers,” Omoniyi added.
nShe reiterated the service’s commitment to continuous taxpayer support, improved tax administration and enhanced Internally Generated Revenue, urging residents to fulfil their civic responsibility by paying their taxes promptly.
