Kebbi unveils N7bn initiatives to revamp city infrastructure

The Kebbi State Government has highlighted over N7bn invested in urban renewal projects, street lighting and infrastructure development as part of activities marking three years of Governor Nasir Idris’ administration.

The figure was disclosed on Monday during an inter-ministerial press briefing held at the ultra-modern Secretariat Complex in Gwadangaji, Birnin Kebbi, where the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hayatudeen Bawa, presented the ministry’s scorecard.

Bawa said the administration’s investments were aimed at transforming Birnin Kebbi and other major towns into centres of economic growth, improved living standards and modern infrastructure.

According to him, the N7bn was committed to the procurement and installation of solar-powered streetlights across major locations including Birnin Kebbi, Zuru, Yauri, Argungu and Bunza.

“The initiative has not only brightened the cities but also strengthened security, boosted commercial activities at night and improved the aesthetic outlook of the state,” he said.

The commissioner also listed major road expansion and upgrade projects designed to reduce congestion and improve movement within urban centres.

He said the government had transformed prominent roundabouts such as Khalifa, Yar Yara, Plus Centre and Kawara, while a new city gate had also been constructed at Kofa Sabuwa.

Bawa added that asphalt laying and interlocking works had been completed along key routes, including the Sani Abacha Bypass and the road linking Polaris Bank to Khalifa Roundabout.

On environmental management, he said the government had intensified flood control efforts through drainage clearance, evacuation and extension of drainage channels at critical points.

“The Kebbi State Urban Development Authority has been strengthened with operational equipment to ensure effective waste management and maintain cleanliness across the state capital,” he stated.

He further disclosed that modern LCD screens had been installed at strategic locations in Birnin Kebbi to enhance communication between the government and residents through real-time updates.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Birnin Kebbi, said the inter-ministerial briefing was introduced to keep citizens adequately informed about government programmes and achievements.

“The forum provides a platform for ministries to present their scorecards while deepening public understanding of policies and programmes,” he said.

The Kebbi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustained development and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people.
