Kebbi launches crackdown on notorious 'Yan vocal' online fraud ring

The Kebbi State Government has launched a crackdown on the "Yan Vocal" cybercrime syndicate, vowing to dismantle the network and prosecute those responsible for online fraud, blackmail, and cyber extortion targeting victims in and outside Nigeria.

Credible intelligence suggests that the syndicate, composed of young people aged 19 to 24, operates from Argungu Local Government Area, specializing in hacking social media accounts, creating fake online identities, and using threats to extort money from unsuspecting victims.

The government has described the group's activities as a growing threat to public safety and national security, prompting the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, to issue a statement on Sunday.

The statement expressed grave concern over the activities of the "Yan Vocal" syndicate and reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting residents from cyber-enabled crimes, citing the need to safeguard public safety and national security.

According to the government, the suspects target Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, and other social media users by sending explicit content, manipulating video calls and photographs, and blackmailing victims into making financial payments.

The syndicate allegedly targets high-profile individuals, including political office holders, traditional and religious leaders, business owners, and prominent personalities in Nigeria, as well as in neighboring countries like Niger, Ghana, and the Republic of Benin.

Preliminary investigations have identified 19 suspected members of the group, with security agencies uncovering their operational methods, meeting points, and channels used to receive illicit proceeds through digital financial platforms.

The Kebbi State Government has assured the public that security agencies are working to dismantle the criminal network and bring those involved to justice, vowing that no effort will be spared to ensure cybercriminals find no safe haven in the state.
