Kano, Jigawa Customs generated N63.07bn in six months -Controller

The Kano/Jigawa Customs Area Command generated N63.07 billion in revenue between January and June 2026.

The command’s Acting Area Controller, Usman Umar Adamu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the command’s achievements during the first half of the 2026 fiscal year at the Customs House, Bompai, Kano, on Wednesday.

He said the figure exceeded the N58.3 billion generated during the corresponding period of 2025 by N4.6 billion, representing a 7.4 per cent increase.

“This surpassed the N58.3 billion generated during the corresponding period of 2025 by approximately N4.6 billion, representing a growth of about 7.4 per cent, despite the decline in cargo throughput,” he said.

According to him, the Kano Free Trade Zone also generated over N26 billion during the first half of 2026, exceeding the total revenue generated by the zone from January to December 2025 by about N4 billion.

“The Command’s initiatives also led to the recovery of about N3 billion from abuse of transit procedures during the period under review,” he said.

He disclosed that the command also intercepted no fewer than 14 containers over diversion and abuse of transit procedures within the past six months.

“The command intercepted 14 x 40ft transit containers involved in diversion and abuse of transit procedures of Customs clearance in violation of Sections 45, 64 and 235 of the NCS Act 2023,” he said.

He said the achievements were recorded following intensified enforcement activities through intelligence-driven operations and effective inter-agency collaboration, in line with the Service’s mandate to protect the nation’s economy and prevent the importation of controlled, prohibited and restricted goods.

According to him, the efforts resulted in 13 categories of notable detentions and seizures, including smuggled vehicles and truck heads.

He added that other seized items included foreign spaghetti, macaroni, parboiled rice, vegetable oil, and counterfeit packaging materials for agrochemicals and insecticides, among others.

The Area Controller said no fewer than 22 suspects were arrested in connection with the detentions and seizures.

“Some of the suspects have been handed over to the relevant security and regulatory agencies for further investigation, while others are on administrative bail,” he said.

The acting Customs Area Controller said the total detentions and seizures recorded during the period under review had a Duty Paid Value of N1.7 billion.

He urged members of the public and stakeholders to comply with government fiscal and trade measures as the country moves into the second half of 2026.

The acting Customs Area Controller assured that the command would continue to build on the achievements through sustained collaboration and intelligence-driven operations.

“We remain committed to facilitating legitimate trade, protecting our nation’s economy and generating revenue for national development,” he added.
