Kano equips nearly 2,000 meat sellers with essential equipment

The Kano State Government distributed working tools to at least 1,900 butchers from the 44 local government areas on Thursday, as part of its empowerment programme, with the aim of supporting these artisans in their daily activities.

At the event, which took place at the Government House, Governor Abba Yusuf underscored the importance of maintaining strict hygiene standards in meat processing, stating that this aspect is non-negotiable and a key component of his administration’s commitment to economic empowerment.

Yusuf outlined the initiative as a critical aspect of his administration’s broader agenda, which seeks to bolster small businesses, reduce poverty, enhance food safety, and promote sustainable economic growth throughout Kano State, ultimately benefiting its citizens.

The governor acknowledged the vital role butchers play in the food supply chain, highlighting the need for high standards of cleanliness in abattoirs and meat processing centres to safeguard public health and prevent the spread of food-borne diseases.

He cautioned that poor sanitary practices can have severe consequences, including exposing consumers to preventable diseases, and reiterated that hygiene is the cornerstone of safe and quality meat production, which must be upheld at all times.

Yusuf urged the beneficiaries of the empowerment programme to utilise the support to expand their businesses, increase productivity, create job opportunities, and improve their overall livelihoods, contributing to the state’s economic development.

The governor noted that empowering artisans and trade associations remains a central aspect of his administration’s people-focused economic development strategy, which prioritises the growth and development of its citizens.

According to Yusuf, the state government will continue to implement policies and programmes that foster entrepreneurship, empower citizens, and strengthen key sectors of the economy, driving growth and development in Kano State.

He added that achieving sustainable development is only possible when individuals are equipped with the necessary tools and opportunities to become self-reliant, which is a core objective of his administration’s economic development strategy.

Alhaji Nasiru Isyaku, Chairman of the Kano State Butchers Association, praised the intervention as unprecedented, stating that the empowerment package would significantly improve the welfare of butchers and enhance professionalism within the industry.

Isyaku commended Governor Yusuf for recognising the contributions of butchers to food security and public health, and pledged that members of the association would continue to uphold hygienic practices and adhere to professional standards in their operations, ensuring the well-being of consumers.
