Kano Educates Medical Personnel on Biological Threats and Illness Monitoring

The Kano State Government has provided training to Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers from seven local government areas in the state, focusing on bio-risk management and zoonotic disease sample collection, as part of efforts to bolster public health preparedness.

This training, which spanned two days, was a collaborative effort between the Ministry for Livestock Development and the Kano State Centre for Disease Control, with support from the Core Group Partners Project.

A statement issued by the Director General of the KNCDC, Prof. Mohammad Adamu Abbas, outlined the details of the training, which was made available on Friday.

The statement highlighted that the Kano State Government has taken a significant step towards enhancing public health preparedness with the successful completion of the workshop on Bio-risk Management and Zoonotic Disease Sample Collection.

The primary goal of the training was to augment the capacity of frontline health workers in managing bio-risks, improve the safe handling and collection of zoonotic disease samples, and strengthen surveillance and reporting systems across the state.

The workshop drew participants from seven Local Government Areas, including Doguwa, Tofa, Takai, Kura, Dawakin Tofa, Kumbotso, and Bunkure, as well as key stakeholders from surveillance, laboratory services, infection prevention and control, and data management.

These seven local government areas have been identified as high-burden zones for zoonotic diseases in Kano State, according to the statement.

At the close of the workshop, KNCDC DG, Prof. Muhammad Abbas, noted that the training has significantly enhanced the technical capacity of surveillance officers and underscored the importance of timely and accurate disease reporting in preventing outbreaks.

Prof. Abbas also emphasized the initiative's focus on the One Health approach, which promotes collaboration between human, animal, and environmental health sectors.

The state government, as reaffirmed by Prof. Abbas, remains committed to continuous capacity building, improved logistics, and enhanced community engagement to ensure effective prevention and response to zoonotic diseases.
