Kano begins 800-tree planting campaign at college

The Kano State Government has commenced the planting of 800 tree seedlings at the Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies under the “Make AKCILS Green” initiative.

The exercise, led by the college’s Agricultural Science Department in collaboration with the state Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, is aimed at creating a greener campus and promoting environmental responsibility among students.

The state Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahir Hashim, flagged off the exercise on Monday.

Speaking during the event, Hashim said the initiative was a practical step towards strengthening environmental awareness and building a climate-resilient society.

n

“This is a practical step towards creating a greener campus and promoting environmental responsibility among students,” the commissioner said.

He urged other schools, tertiary institutions, government agencies, private organisations and individuals across the state to adopt tree planting as part of their environmental sustainability efforts.

“I encourage other schools, tertiary institutions, public agencies, private organisations and individuals across Kano State to follow this example by making tree planting and environmental stewardship a permanent part of their institutional culture,” he said.

Hashim commended the college for translating environmental awareness into concrete action, describing the initiative as an example that other institutions could emulate.

He also disclosed that the Acting Provost of the college, Dr Ali Tamasi Mu’az, commended the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for its environmental and climate change reforms across the state.

According to him, the college also presented requests for intervention from the ministry during the event.

“The College presented requests for the Ministry’s intervention, which we promptly accepted and have already commenced action on,” Hashim said.

He said sustained tree planting and environmental stewardship were necessary to improve the quality of the environment and strengthen Kano’s resilience to climate-related challenges.

The commissioner added, “Together, we can make every campus greener and contribute to a healthier, more climate-resilient Kano State.”

The initiative is expected to provide a greener environment for students while encouraging them to take greater responsibility for environmental protection and sustainability.
