Kaduna backs prosecution of 24 suspects over mob killing

The Kaduna State Government has welcomed the arraignment of 24 suspects in connection with the mob killing of a woman in Maraban Jos, describing the development as a key step toward justice and the enforcement of the rule of law.

The government also commended the Kaduna State Police Command for what it described as a swift and professional response to the incident, which triggered widespread public outrage across the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, the government condemned mob violence and jungle justice, warning that anyone found taking the law into their own hands would face the full weight of the law.

Maiyaki said the administration of Governor Uba Sani remained firmly committed to protecting lives and property and would not tolerate extra-judicial actions under any guise.

He stressed that the rule of law remains the foundation of democratic governance, adding that no grievance, allegation, or suspicion justifies taking a life outside lawful processes.

According to him, the incident underscores the dangers of mob action and the need for citizens to report suspicions to appropriate security agencies rather than resorting to violence.

The commissioner urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and allow due process to take its course in all criminal matters.

He also expressed confidence in the ongoing police investigation, noting that authorities had disclosed that more than 100 additional suspects were still being investigated in connection with the incident.

Maiyaki further assured residents that the state government would continue to support security agencies and the judiciary in ensuring accountability, maintaining public order, and protecting citizens’ rights.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and called for calm, peace, and cooperation with security agencies.

“The sanctity of human life must be respected at all times. Kaduna State will continue to stand firmly for justice, peaceful coexistence and adherence to the rule of law. We must collectively reject violence and vigilantism in all its forms,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Police Command had on Tuesday announced the arraignment of 24 suspects before a Magistrate Court sitting at NDA Junction, Kaduna, over the June 21 mob killing.

The suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, destruction of public and police property, and culpable homicide.

Police investigations indicated that the victim was allegedly attacked and killed by an angry mob after being taken from police custody, where she had initially been held for protection following allegations of child theft.

The court ordered the remand of the suspects in a correctional facility and adjourned the case until July 21, 2026, for further hearing.
