Jigawa assembly receives constitution amendment bill, pledges timely action

The Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly has confirmed receipt of the Constitution Amendment Bill transmitted by the National Assembly, vowing that the state legislature will do the needful before the deadline at the end of this month.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists on Friday in his office at the Assembly Complex in Dutse, the Speaker, Haruna Dangyatim, said the Assembly had already received the bill and would soon commence work on it within the stipulated timeline.

Dangyatim disclosed that the bill had been transmitted since last Wednesday to all state Houses of Assembly for concurrence, as required by law, adding that Jigawa would not be left behind.

“We have received the Constitution Amendment Bill from the National Assembly, and I want to assure you that we will do the needful before the deadline given to all state assemblies which is the end of this month,” the Speaker said.

“Within the stipulated timeline contained in the letter of the bill, we are given 30 days to complete the legislative work on the bill from the date we received the letter,” he stated.

He explained that the Assembly had set up a committee to critically examine the amendments and make recommendations that reflect the interests of the people of Jigawa State.

According to him, the amendment process is crucial to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and addressing grey areas in the 1999 Constitution.

Furthermore, the Speaker assured that the House would give the bill accelerated attention, noting that, “We are studying the document thoroughly to ensure that our position aligns with the aspirations of our people.”

He added that the Assembly would engage stakeholders, including traditional rulers, civil society and professional bodies, to get their input before taking a final decision.

Accordingly, Dangyatim stressed that transparency and patriotism would guide the House in its consideration of the bill, stating that, “We will not compromise the interest of Jigawa State and Nigeria at large.”
