Iwobi doubtful for Unity Cup

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is facing a race against time to be fit for Nigeria’s Unity Cup campaign later this month after providing an update on the hamstring injury he suffered during Fulham’s Premier League clash against Brentford on April 18, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigeria international has missed Fulham’s last three league games following the setback, which forced him off shortly before half-time against Brentford after he pulled up unchallenged while chasing a loose ball.

Iwobi headed straight down the tunnel after he was replaced, with the injury now casting doubt over his availability for the upcoming Unity Cup, which will be played from May 26 to 30, in London.

Speaking on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast, the Super Eagles midfielder explained that he has been trying to stay active while recovering from the injury.

“I’m just walking through my neighbourhoods, going through the shops. Obviously, the reason why I’m doing this is to get some blood flow and oxygen into the legs, make sure my legs are not just indoors, and keep active,” Iwobi said.

“Right now, as it stands, I have got a hamstring injury, so I’m going to keep on the move and get my steps in. It’s unfortunate to get a hamstring injury. I appreciate the support and the love that everyone’s showing me, and everyone checking on me.

“As of now, I don’t know how bad it is. I’m able to walk, though I’ve got a limp, so that’s a positive. I’ve got a scan soon, so I’m praying for a speedy recovery.”

The 29-year-old also admitted that the injury has been mentally challenging, despite not being someone who suffers setbacks regularly.

“I’m just grateful that I don’t really get injured on a regular basis because it is mentally challenging. Even me, now that I’m injured, I’m just fuming. I can’t be active, I can’t move freely. But that’s life; it is part of the game.”

Iwobi has been one of Fulham’s key players this season, making 27 Premier League appearances with four goals and three assists while clocking 2,279 minutes.
