Iran blames US and Israel for devastating its power and water infrastructure

Iran's energy minister revealed on Sunday that the country's water and energy infrastructure has been severely impaired due to strikes launched by the US and Israel.

These strikes, which occurred on February 28, resulted in the death of Iran's supreme leader and triggered a war that has now expanded across the Middle East.

According to energy minister Abbas Aliabadi, the country's essential water and electricity infrastructure has sustained substantial damage from terrorist and cyberattacks perpetrated by the US and Israel, as reported by the ISNA news agency.

Aliabadi noted that the attacks specifically targeted numerous water transmission and treatment facilities, causing destruction to parts of critical water supply networks, and that repair efforts are currently underway.

US President Donald Trump issued a threat earlier on Sunday, stating that Iran's power plants would be targeted if the strategic Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within a 48-hour timeframe.

Since the onset of the war, traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz, which normally facilitates the passage of 20 per cent of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas, has been significantly disrupted.

Iranian forces have attacked multiple vessels, citing that these ships failed to heed warnings against navigating the waterway, and in recent days, Iran has permitted vessels from friendly countries to pass while cautioning that it would block ships from countries deemed to have joined the aggression against it.

In response to Trump's threat, Iran vowed to target energy infrastructure and desalination plants across the region.
