Infant pulled to safety from debris following twin earthquakes in Venezuela

A dramatic rescue effort in La Guaira, a coastal city in Venezuela, culminated in the extraction of a newborn baby from a fallen building a staggering 32 hours after twin earthquakes ravaged the area.

The rescue, which took place under the glare of a floodlight, was captured on video and shared on social media on Friday, showing rescuers painstakingly navigating collapsed masonry to reach the infant.

The footage, posted by Andreina Quintero, reveals the moment the baby, swaddled in a quilt, was carefully lifted out of the rubble and handed from person to person, before being gently cleaned with tissues.

According to Quintero, the rescued baby was a mere 18 days old and, remarkably, emerged from the ordeal without injury, having been trapped for an astonishing 32 hours.

The child's mother was rescued just an hour later, and a subsequent video shared by Quintero shows her lying in a hospital bed, where a medical worker informs her that the baby appears to be unharmed.

The medic suggests that the mother's swift actions, possibly covering the baby with her body or an object, may have shielded the child from harm and facilitated the baby's fortunate escape.

The devastating earthquakes, which struck on Wednesday with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, have claimed the lives of at least 920 people, with thousands more injured or still unaccounted for.
