INEC issues official certificates to victorious candidates from recent June 20 by-elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission has presented Certificates of Return to the victorious candidates of the June 20, 2026, bye-elections, which took place in Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Kano states, in a ceremony held on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, by the Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu.

The presentation was announced in a statement posted on the INEC’s X handle on Tuesday, where details of the event were shared with the public.

During her remarks, Agbamuche-Mbu extended congratulations to the winners and urged them to diligently serve their constituents, emphasizing that their primary responsibility is to effectively represent the people, stating that "The most important responsibility is to represent the people well."

Agbamuche-Mbu also noted that Certificates of Return would be presented to winners in Kebbi State for the Zuru State Constituency election and in Ekiti State for the governorship election, as part of the commission's ongoing efforts to conclude the electoral process.

The All Progressives Congress recorded a dominant performance in Saturday’s by-elections, securing victories in Ondo, Nasarawa, Kano, and Kebbi states, while the Peoples Democratic Party retained the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat, according to reports from PUNCH Online.

The results, announced by INEC on Sunday, strengthened the APC’s legislative presence across the country, although some of the contests were overshadowed by allegations of electoral irregularities, violence, and voter intimidation, which marred the electoral process.

Ikeje Asogwa, the APC’s candidate, emerged as the winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, marking a significant victory for the party in the region.

Rabiu Garba Aiki of the APC was declared the winner of the Zuru State Constituency by-election into the Kebbi State House of Assembly, further solidifying the party's position in the state.

Rabiu Shuaibu of the APC was declared the winner of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election in Kano State, securing a crucial win for the party.

Olaka Nwogu, the PDP’s candidate, was declared the winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election, allowing the party to retain the seat.

Dayo Faduyile of the APC won the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election, contributing to the party's overall strong performance in the elections.

Danladi Envulu-anza, the APC candidate for the Nasarawa North Senatorial by-election, was declared the winner of the poll after securing 45,362 votes, a significant margin of victory.

In the Ekiti State governorship election, Governor Biodun Oyebanji was re-elected, becoming the first governor to be re-elected back-to-back in the state since 1999, a historic achievement for the governor and his party.
