INEC fixes Sept 19 for by-elections in four states

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, for by-elections in four states.

The affected states are Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta, according to the commission.

INEC disclosed this in a post on its official X handle on Friday.

The commission listed the affected constituencies as “Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.”

According to INEC, voting will take place at polling units within the affected constituencies.

The commission said the elections would begin at 8:30am and end at 2:30pm.

The five seats became vacant under different circumstances.

In Gombe, the Federal Constituency seat became vacant following the death of the lawmaker representing it, Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who died in June 2026.

The two Bauchi State House of Assembly seats also became vacant for different reasons. The former occupant of the Sakwa seat died, while the lawmaker representing Disina resigned to contest a chairmanship position.

In Delta, the state House of Assembly declared the Udu constituency seat vacant after its former occupant, Collins Egbetamah, defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The Dawakin Kudu seat in Kano became vacant after its former occupant, Rabiu Shuaibu, left the State Assembly to contest the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat.

Shuaibu subsequently won the federal constituency bye-election held in June, defeating candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement and Labour Party.

INEC has therefore scheduled the September 19 poll to fill the five legislative vacancies across the four states.
