Indonesia's leader taps interim head of national bank for permanent role

Indonesia's president, Prabowo Subianto, has put forward Destry Damayanti, the acting central bank governor, as the sole nominee to permanently fill the position she has held since Perry Warjiyo's sudden resignation last month, according to the government's announcement on Monday.
nThe nomination was confirmed by presidential spokesman Prasetyo Hadi, who stated, "There is only one name, it is Destry Damayanti," in response to inquiries from reporters in Jakarta.
nThe ultimate decision on the new governor rests with Parliament, which is currently in recess, and the nomination is being closely monitored by the markets.
nPrior to taking on the interim role, 62-year-old economist Destry Damayanti served as a deputy governor of the central bank, a position she had held since 2019, following in the footsteps of Perry Warjiyo.
nPerry Warjiyo's unexpected departure in late July marked the second time a major economic policymaker has left their post since President Prabowo Subianto took office in October 2024.
nThis move sparked speculation that the governor had faced pressure to support the government's pro-growth agenda, as suggested by Capital Economics and other observers.
nAnalysts have noted that the selection of Perry's replacement will be closely watched for any signs of political interference in the decision-making process.
nPrabowo's nephew, Thomas Djiwandono, who is also a deputy governor, had been mentioned as a potential candidate to succeed Perry Warjiyo.
nConcerns about the independence of Bank Indonesia have been heightened by a bill passed in July, which tasks Parliament with evaluating the institution's performance and assigns it responsibility for driving economic growth, a key focus of Prabowo's agenda.
nPerry Warjiyo's resignation occurred amidst a challenging economic backdrop, with the rupiah experiencing a significant decline and the stock market struggling.
nThe currency has suffered greatly due to rising energy costs, losing around seven per cent since the Middle East conflict began in February, making it Asia's worst-performing currency, as reported by Bloomberg News.
nThe bank's board of governors, comprising the governor and several deputy governors, is responsible for setting monetary policy and determining interest rates.
nIn the last policy meeting led by Perry Warjiyo in late July, the bank maintained its benchmark rate at 5.75 per cent, following cumulative increases of 100 points this year, which likely frustrated the government, according to Capital Economics.
