Images: Shettima touches down in Lagos for meeting with Tinubu to discuss Maiduguri developments

Vice President Kashim Shettima has landed in Lagos with a mission to brief President Bola Tinubu on the security landscape in Maiduguri, Borno State, following his recent trip to the region.

Shettima's visit to Lagos comes on the heels of a spate of deadly suicide bombings that rocked three locations in Maiduguri last Monday, claiming the lives of at least 23 people and leaving over 100 others injured.

In a social media post on Sunday, Shettima revealed that his visit to Maiduguri was made at the behest of President Tinubu, with the aim of engaging with families and communities reeling from the aftermath of the tragic incidents in the state.

According to the post, Vice President Shettima is set to present President Tinubu with a comprehensive briefing on his findings from Maiduguri, including his firsthand assessment of the situation on the ground and his interactions with affected families and communities.

The post further indicated that following the briefing, Vice President Shettima is expected to lead a delegation of serving governors on a Sallah homage to President Tinubu.

The coordinated attacks in Maiduguri occurred at approximately 7:02 p.m. on Monday, when suicide bombers detonated explosives in quick succession at the bustling Maiduguri Monday Market, the Post Office Flyover area, and the security post at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

According to official reports, the blasts resulted in the loss of 23 lives, with 108 people sustaining injuries of varying severity.

During his visit to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, where many of the injured are undergoing treatment, Vice President Shettima condemned the attacks as "barbaric" and emphasized that no cause, be it religious or otherwise, can justify the killing of innocent civilians.

Shettima assured the victims and their families that the federal government would provide full support through the National Emergency Management Agency, the North East Development Commission, and the Borno State Government.

Vice President Shettima vowed that the government would not relent in its efforts to restore peace and order in Borno, the Northeast, and the nation as a whole, declaring that those responsible for the attacks would be "decisively confronted" and brought to justice.
