Half a dozen APC Kano hopefuls step down, throw weight behind Shekarau's Senate run

A significant development has unfolded in the All Progressives Congress, with six aspirants withdrawing from the Kano Central senatorial seat race ahead of the 2027 general elections and throwing their weight behind former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau.
nThis pivotal decision was made during a high-stakes meeting convened by Governor Abba Yusuf in Abuja on Sunday, which lasted several hours before the agreement was finalized.
nThe aspirants, comprising Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas, and Shehu Isa Driver, explained to journalists that their decision to step down was motivated by a desire to promote unity and peace in Kano State.
nAccording to the aspirants, their endorsement of Shekarau is part of a broader effort to foster political harmony and stability in the state in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
nConfirmation of the arrangement came via a Facebook post by Salisu Kosawa, Governor Yusuf's special assistant on social media, who revealed that the meeting had resulted in a unified position in support of Ibrahim Shekarau.
nShekarau's recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in April has significant implications, with the former governor making the announcement at his Kano residence alongside PDP chieftain Senator Bello Gwarzo.
nAddressing a gathering of supporters and loyalists, Shekarau explained that his decision to defect was made after careful consideration of available political options, and was met with unanimous approval from those present.
nShekarau's political career spans several key roles, including his tenure as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 and his stint as Minister of Education from 2014 to 2015.
