Group rejects consensus outcome in Kano constituency

A group under the aegis of Gaya Youth Democracy Supporters has called on supporters of the All Progressives Congress and other stakeholders in the Ajingi/Gaya/Albasu Federal Constituency to remain calm and shun acts capable of breaching the peace, as they rejected consensus outcome for the constituency.

In a statement on Thursday by its chairman, Musa Adamu Gaya, the group urged Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya, one of the aspirants, to pursue constitutional and democratic channels in response to the recent consensus outcome, which it said infringed upon his right as the overall winner based on stakeholders’ votes.

According to the group, the decision to endorse the incumbent member contravenes the Electoral Act 2026 and the All Progressives Congress Constitution and Guidelines.

It further noted that the decision reached by the majority of stakeholders at the consensus meeting held at the Kano State Government House was disregarded, constituting a clear breach of the principles of fairness and justice.

The group also referenced the position of the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, who recently ruled out automatic tickets for serving elected office holders within the party.

According to him, the APC Constitution provides only for direct primaries and consensus as the legitimate pathways for selecting candidates.

“There is no retreat in our commitment to uphold fairness,” the statement read.

It continued, “This is not about Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya’s personal ambition, but about protecting the collective voice of the people across the three local government areas and safeguarding the integrity of our great party.”

According to the group, the Electoral Act 2026 permits political parties to adopt either direct primaries, where all registered members vote, or consensus, where all cleared aspirants voluntarily provide written consent to a single candidate.

It noted that the consensus vote recorded 55 votes across the three local government areas, with Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya securing 33 votes, representing a clear majority of the stakeholders present.

Despite being convened under party directives, the group alleged that the process was undermined by interference aimed at advancing personal interests to the detriment of equity and democratic principles.

Gaya insisted that the action was not directed solely at Hon. Gaya but against stakeholders and party members across the constituency.

He clarified that no one was informed about the governor’s decision before the lopsided outcome was announced, in contravention of the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

Thus, he promised to ensure that his supporters continued to repose their confidence in the party’s structures and the rule of law, even as he reiterated his commitment to pursuing all lawful and peaceful avenues to ensure that the will of the majority prevails.

Meanwhile, all efforts to speak with the Public Relations Officer of APC in the state, Auwal Abdullahi Soja, failed as he did not respond to the several phone calls initiated by our correspondent to his phone, which went unanswered.
