Governor Abiodun introduces medical coverage scheme for Ogun state pensioners

Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, has given his approval for the expansion of health insurance to include retirees in the state, as part of a new initiative called the Ogun State Retirees Health Insurance Scheme.

This move aims to provide retired public servants with continued access to quality and affordable healthcare, as announced by the state Head of Service, Mr Kehinde Onasanya, in a statement on Thursday.

According to Onasanya, Governor Abiodun has approved a monthly payment of N17.4m to cover the retiree health insurance premium, with all retirees eligible for full insurance coverage without incurring any personal costs.

The initiative underscores the administration's commitment to the welfare of its retirees, marking a significant milestone in the 'Social Welfare and Well-being' agenda of the current government, as noted by Onasanya.

The scheme seeks to protect the health and well-being of retired officers who have dedicated their productive years to serving and developing Ogun State, Onasanya explained.

The introduction of this initiative follows the successful implementation of the Public Sector Health Insurance Scheme for serving public servants, which was launched by the government in August 2024.

Onasanya emphasized that this move reflects the government's deliberate policy direction towards providing inclusive healthcare coverage for all categories of workers, including retirees.

Under the Ogun State Retirees Health Insurance Scheme, beneficiaries will have access to a defined package of healthcare services at accredited facilities across the state, as outlined by Onasanya.

The scheme is expected to alleviate the burden of out-of-pocket medical expenses and prevent catastrophic healthcare spending among retirees, while also promoting continuous healthcare management.
