Government reiterates pledge to cross-border collaboration during Lake Chad Basin gathering

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting regional harmony and cooperation in order to tackle the environmental and security challenges plaguing the Lake Chad Basin.

Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, underscored the importance of collective effort during the 71st session of the Council of Ministers of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, which took place in N’Djamena, Republic of Chad, from March 3 to 6, 2026.

According to a statement released on Friday by Magnus Eze, the minister's Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized the vital role of the LCBC in ensuring environmental sustainability, food security, peace, and collective economic stability in the region.

The minister noted that the Lake Chad Basin is a shared natural resource that serves as a lifeline for over 40 million people across member states, highlighting its immense significance.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu acknowledged that the security situation in the region remains a pressing concern, but commended the ongoing efforts of the Multinational Joint Task Force and the collaboration among member states in combating terrorism and violent extremism.

The minister expressed concern over the impact of climate change on Lake Chad, citing the alarming rate of shrinkage, which she described as one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the region.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu advocated for scientifically grounded solutions aimed at revitalizing the lake and sustaining the livelihoods of millions who depend on it, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach.

The minister conveyed the appreciation of President Bola Tinubu, the Government, and people of Nigeria to member states for endorsing Nigeria's candidate, Ambassador Ibrahim Babani, as the new Executive Secretary of the Commission for a four-year term.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu described Babani as a seasoned diplomat with strong expertise in water resources management, security, and regional cooperation, highlighting his qualifications for the role.

The Nigerian delegation to the meeting included the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, and the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr Emanso Umobong, among other notable representatives.
