Gombe Consolidates Educational Departments in Sector Overhaul Led by Yahaya

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has announced that his administration will commence implementing the recommendations outlined in a task force report focused on reforming and revitalizing basic and technical education in the state.

As part of its efforts to overhaul the education sector, Yahaya's administration has initiated structural reforms, including the consolidation of the ministries of Education and Higher Education into a single entity.

Yahaya made these remarks on Friday while receiving the report of the Taskforce Committee on the Reforms and Revitalisation of Basic and Technical Education in the state, which was presented by committee member and educationist Tom Maiyashi, alongside Commissioner for Education and taskforce chairman, Dr Aishatu Maigari.

The governor characterized the report as a vital roadmap for transforming the state's education system, and assured that his administration would act on the recommendations without delay.

Yahaya stated, "On the report, I want to assure you that we are not going to abandon this document, we shall study it immediately and begin implementation of the recommendations," underscoring his commitment to taking swift action.

According to Yahaya, the ongoing restructuring aims to enhance coordination, improve policy implementation, and boost service delivery across the state's education sector, with the ultimate goal of producing a skilled workforce equipped for the future.

The governor explained that the reforms are part of a broader effort to reposition education in line with the state's 10-year development agenda, which includes introducing bold policy measures to improve learning outcomes.

Yahaya reflected on the condition of the state's education sector when his administration took office in 2019, noting that several interventions had been undertaken to address infrastructure, teacher development, school enrolment, and access to quality education.

He assured that his administration remains committed to investing in reforms that will guarantee quality education for future generations, saying "I want to reiterate the pledge I made that we will leave Gombe better than we met it in the education sector."

Presenting the report, Maiyashi commended the governor for establishing the committee and providing the necessary political support, describing the report as an honest assessment of the challenges confronting basic and technical education in Gombe.

Maiyashi urged the state government to swiftly move from policy formulation to execution, emphasizing that the committee's recommendations are practical and implementable.

Commissioner for Education Maigari noted that the taskforce was inaugurated in November 2025 to conduct a comprehensive assessment of basic and technical education across the state, and was mandated to develop actionable strategies and recommend practical reforms.

The taskforce includes notable members such as former Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Dr Nura Yakubu, and former Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, among others.

The state government believes that implementing the report's recommendations will complement ongoing interventions and provide a more coordinated approach to addressing longstanding challenges in basic and technical education.
